“The passion which we bring to great tasting coffee is the same passion that we bring towards energy efficiency and environmental soundness.”- Jason King, Senior Director of Facilities, Keurig Green Mountain, Waterbury
A cup of joe is more than a drink. It's an experience - one that Keuring Green Mountain's growing customer base looks forward to every day. Founded in 1981 as a small cafe in Waitsfield, VT, Keurig Green Mountain is now a global leader in specialty coffee and coffe makers.
Along with its award-winning coffees and innovative brewing technology, Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. has a deep environmental commitment and ambitious sustainability goals. To help them meet these goals, they strive to make sure that energy efficiency is incorporated into all their facilities, and that their projects for new buildings and expansion projects include a broad range of energy efficiency investments.
"The passion which we bring to great tasting coffee is the same passion that we bring towards energy efficiency and environmental soundness," says Jason King, Senior Director of Facilities. One direct result of this passion is having been awarded two LEED (Leader in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications for their buildings.
Some upgrades they have invested in include:
- Compressed air systems - variable speed compressors and dryers, efficient pipe design, and control strategies that optimize performance
- HVAC technology - high efficiency heat exchangers and chillers
- Roasting technology - variable speed fans
- Lighting systems - high efficiency fluorescent and LED technology
Keurig Green Mountain has collaborated with Efficiency Vermont on over 27 projects during the last five years. They include office space renovations that achieved Gold and Silver certification under the LEED for Commercial Interiors Rating System, as well as an 80,000 square foot expansion of its Waterbury, VT manufacturing plant and a newly-expanded 215,000 square foot facility in Essex, VT. As a result, the company’s annual energy savings total nearly $725,000.
In keeping with its deep environmental commitment, Keurig Green Mountain includes energy efficiency in job descriptions for roles impacting its energy footprint. Company managers provide efficiency goals to all manufacturing facilities. Their efforts are tracked monthly and reported quarterly to the entire organization.
The company's sustainability commitment extents far outside its walls. It also invests in sustainably grown coffee, allocates a portion of its pre-tax profits to socially and environmentally responsible initiatives and has reduced its climate impact by offsetting greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy savings go a very long way toward helping Keurig Green Mountain decrease their energy footprint, helping to ensure that their sustainability success is as rich and deep as its coffee.
