“Our home is far more comfortable, especially the basement, where I spend a lot of time building model trains.”

Middlesex, Washington County -

Paul Hanlon and his partner Mimi built their home in the late 1970s. At the time, its energy efficiency features were state of the art. But 35 years later they wondered if they could reduce their energy use further using today’s technology. They hired William Fitzpatrick of Shelter Construction, a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® contractor, to perform an energy audit.

Through the energy audit, the couple pinpointed the most cost-effective improvements for their home. They chose to pursue thorough air-sealing and insulation of their home’s attic, basement, and crawl spaces. Once cold and inhospitable in the winter months, the basement is now warm enough to allow Hanlon to work on his model trains year-round. Not only have the improvements made the home more comfortable, they have also made the energy bills more affordable. The homeowners are delighted with the results—they’re saving $750 every year on energy costs.
