Meet the Chocolatiers
Barry Callebaut is known as the world’s leading manufacturer of chocolate and cocoa, and for good reason: Every move they make is carefully considered in the context of their long-term business strategy, and that includes their approach to energy efficiency.
Since 2005, the Saint Albans plant has been working with Efficiency Vermont to analyze and improve their operations, taking calculated steps toward reducing energy use. Projects to-date include a facility-wide lighting renovation, heating and cooling improvements, and strategic equipment upgrades—the cumulative effect of which is saving them an estimated $119,000 per year.
To push their sustainability efforts even further, Barry Callebaut has begun drawing upon employee knowledge of existing inefficiencies and bringing these ideas for systems upgrades to Efficiency Vermont for technical review. From there, projects are vetted using site-specific data analysis to assess their actual savings potential, and only the most cost-effective ideas are pursued.
Barry Callebaut has set an aggressive goal to reduce CO2 emissions from their factories by 20% per tonne of production by 2014. The Saint Albans plant is well on its way to meeting that goal and, in fact, poised as a leader in the effort.
